Peelings

What are Facial Peels?

Facial peeling, or chemical exfoliation, is a cosmetic treatment that uses a chemical solution to remove the outer layers of dead skin cells, revealing new, healthier skin underneath. Peels are used to improve skin texture, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, correct hyperpigmentation, treat acne scars, and address sun damage. The depth of the peel depends on the type and concentration of the chemical, with options ranging from superficial to deep.

How they work

  • A chemical solution is applied to the skin, causing it to exfoliate and peel off over time.
  • This process stimulates cell turnover and encourages the growth of new, smoother, and more even-toned skin.
  • The removal of dead, damaged skin can also lead to the formation of new collagen.

Common Uses

  • Smoother skin texture and tone: Removes dead cells to reveal a brighter, more vibrant complexion.
  • Reduce signs of aging: Addresses fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage (photoaging).
  • Correct discoloration: Treats issues like dark spots, sun spots, melasma, and other forms of hyperpigmentation.
  • Treat acne and scars: Can improve the appearance of active acne, unclog pores, and soften acne scars.

Types of facial peels

  • Chemical peels: The most common type, using acidic solutions to exfoliate the skin.
  • Mechanical peels: Use physical or micro-abrasive methods, such as dermaplaning or dermabrasion, to remove the outer layers of skin.

What to expect

  • Superficial peels are often called "lunchtime peels" and have minimal downtime.
  • Medium and deep peels result in more intense inflammation and swelling, with longer recovery times.
  • After a peel, skin will be more sensitive, and it is crucial to follow aftercare instructions, which may include using a post-care kit and avoiding sun exposure.
  • Multiple treatments may be needed to achieve desired results.

Cosmelan

A Cosmelan peel is a professional depigmentation treatment that addresses hyperpigmentation like melasma and sunspots by combining a professional mask application with a long-term at-home maintenance routine. It works by combining active ingredients that inhibit melanin production, which not only treats existing discoloration but also prevents new spots from forming. The process involves applying a mask in a clinic that the patient leaves on for several hours, followed by a strict home care regimen with a maintenance cream to ensure long-lasting results.

A phenol peel is the most aggressive type of chemical peel, using carbolic acid to deeply exfoliate the skin to treat severe sun damage, deep wrinkles, and scars. It promotes new skin growth and provides dramatic, long-lasting results, but requires a lengthy recovery period and is most suitable for fair-skinned individuals with significant skin damage.
